Don’t Judge a Roof by its Shingles

Can the same be said for roofing? Absolutely. All roofers have access to the same building materials. But not all of them have the skills or integrity to install the best elements for you and your family. And let’s face it, it’s what on the inside that counts. Not just the goings on of a family inside their home, but what’s been installed under the shingles, under the vapor barriers and ice shield.

Venltilation Matters

“Ventilate” comes from the Latin word for “to fan.” Simply put, it’s the action of moving air. Out with the hot. In with the cool. And that’s exactly how ventilation works. It provides conditions that allow air to flow. Every time stale, the overheated air in your home or attic is vented out and fresh air is pulled in to replace it, you have what is known as an “air exchange.”

Ice Damming

Ice dams are most common in northern climates that are subject to heavy snow buildups on roofs. Ice dams occur when this heavy snow buildup melts during the day and then refreezes when temperatures fall overnight. After several days of the thaw-freeze cycle, it’s common for the ice to work up under the shingles until it reached an area of the roof warmed by your home.
